One of the cornerstones of my coaching practice is helping clients tackle overwhelming problems that leave them feeling stuck and uncertain. Often, these issues loom large, casting long shadows over our lives and clouding our ability to see a way forward. The key to overcoming these seemingly insurmountable obstacles lies in breaking them down into manageable parts and addressing the beliefs that bind us to them.
Unpacking Beliefs
Let’s take the example of someone wanting to move to a new job/workplace but feeling overwhelmed by the prospect. They might hold beliefs such as “I’m not qualified enough,” “I won’t be able to handle the interview process” or “Changing jobs is too risky.” By unpacking these beliefs, we can start to understand their origins and challenge their hold on us. For instance, we might explore past successes, qualifications, and the current job market to provide a more balanced perspective.
Creating Small, Actionable Steps
Once we have a clearer understanding of the beliefs at play, the next step is to break the problem down into small, actionable steps. For our job mover, this might look like:
- Updating their CV and LinkedIn profile.
- Researching companies and job openings in their field.
- Networking with industry contacts or attending relevant events.
- Listing non-negotiables and must-haves for considering a job change
- Attending an interview for practice to build their confidence.
These steps are manageable and provide a clear path forward, making the daunting task of changing jobs more approachable.
Gaining Clarity
As we take these small steps, clarity begins to emerge. For example, through research and networking, our job seeker might discover new opportunities they hadn’t considered before, or they might receive positive feedback that boosts their confidence. Each step forward sheds light on the next, turning confusion into clear direction.
Building Momentum
This process of breaking down the problem, unpacking beliefs, and taking small actionable steps creates a positive feedback loop. Each success fuels the next, and before long, clients find themselves out the other side of the problem, having navigated through it with newfound skills and resilience. Making future transitions less intimidating.
Conclusion
In my coaching practice, I am continually inspired by the resilience and growth I witness in my clients as they move from overwhelm to clarity, from stuck to empowered. It is a profound journey, and I am honored to be part of it.
If you find yourself facing a problem that feels too big to tackle, remember that you don’t have to do it alone. With the right support and a step-by-step approach, you can break free from the overwhelm and move forward towards a healthier, more fulfilling life.
